Contemporary dance is a less defined
style of dance that encourages individuality. It is
known for pushing boundaries and is constantly
re-inventing itself. Sometimes a story is told through
the movement while other times the choreographer is
working with an abstract idea. Since the style can vary
greatly from choreographer to choreographer, we expose
students to a wide variety of ways to move. Class starts
with exercises on the floor that will warm up the body
and introduce new concepts. Typical movements in the
center and across the floor include fall and recovery,
inversions, floor work and off center movements. We will
play with dynamics, expression, time, space and energy.
Although contemporary stresses individuality, a strong
ballet foundation is needed to be successful in the
style. Dancers signing up for the course should be at
ballet level 3 or above.
